Gu Wanyue is Pangzhen’s defence exam, and the first rule is counter-intuitive: most of your damage is wasted. Smoke-like wisps trail her body for much of the fight, and while they do she is incorporeal — sword hits pass through her and deal no HP damage. The fight is won by emptying her Sha-Chi, not by chasing her health bar. Once that clicks, the encounter stops being a ghost story and becomes a resource puzzle with a very punishable grab.

Location and unlock

Gu Wanyue is a main-path boss in Pangzhen, Chapter 4, fought at the Pond of Fading Song. You cannot miss her. She is the fourth fight in the region’s opening sequence — Blaze at South Gate Bridge, Cavalrybane at the Pavilion of Knowledge, Wu Xuan at the Backstreet Archway, then Gu Wanyue at the pond — and she gates the next stretch of the Pangzhen route.

There is no unlock condition beyond reaching the pond. She has one phase and no adds, so there is no second bar to plan around and no crowd-control layer. The fight is a single, repeatable Sha-Chi cycle: parry the orb, dodge the grabs, punish the stagger, disengage, rebuild.

Reward and missable warning

The boss table lists Fanatic’s Fragment as her reward. The Pangzhen route names Fixation. The repo does not reconcile the two labels, so treat the exact item name as unconfirmed and check the drop on your save rather than relying on either string. What is consistent is that she is a main-path boss with a one-per-run drop.

Because she is mandatory, the reward is not missable on a completed run. Boss drops do not respawn and there is no Remembrance-style refight, so this is your only chance at the item on the current playthrough. The broader Pangzhen missable is the Mirage Estate cutoff at the Green Serpent House, which is later in the region and has nothing to do with Gu Wanyue herself.

Fight plan: break Sha-Chi, not health

The core loop is explicit in the sourced strategy. While the smoke-like wisps trail her, she is incorporeal, and sword hits pass through her without dealing HP damage. Do not chase her across the arena. Do not spend a Power Surge on a ghost. The fight is a Sha-Chi break, and the health bar only becomes relevant once you force her corporeal.

Emptying her Sha-Chi staggers her into a short corporeal window. That is your damage phase. Land your heaviest combo, then disengage and rebuild the bar. Do not try to extend the window with greedy follow-ups; the point of the loop is that you get another one.

The cleanest source of Sha-Chi damage is her purple orb. It flashes blue, so parry it back at her instead of dodging. The reflected hit takes a large chunk of her bar and is safer than closing distance. This is the fight’s central read: the orb is not a dodge prompt, it is a parry prompt, and the colour is blue even though the projectile reads purple at a glance.

Her sleeve strings are ordinary parries. They exist to set up the two red-flash grabs: a long-distance ground throw and the Neck Breaker, where she flips onto Soul’s shoulders. Both are unblockable. Dodge on the lunge, not on the wind-up. A clean Neck Breaker dodge removes more than a quarter of her Sha-Chi, so the move that ends most first attempts is also your best opening.

Attack tells and red/blue/black handling

Tell Response Punish
Purple orb, blue flash Parry it back Large Sha-Chi chunk
Sleeve string Parry Short punish
Long-distance ground throw, red flash Dodge on the lunge Sha-Chi pressure
Neck Breaker, red flash Dodge on the lunge >25% Sha-Chi
Black smoke flood Stop swinging, keep moving Wait for visibility
Close-range screech Break the stun prompt Dodge the dive
Smoke-like wisps She is incorporeal Build Sha-Chi, do not chase

The blue orb is the exception that proves the rule: blue means parry, even when the projectile’s body is purple. The grabs are red and unblockable, and the correct dodge timing is on the lunge rather than the wind-up. The black smoke is not a damage phase. When she floods the arena, stop swinging: she can still grab from behind, and visibility is the actual hazard. Keep moving, block what you can see, and listen for the lunge. Visibility returns on its own.

If she screeches at close range, break the stun prompt and dodge the dive that follows. That sequence is a free punish if you handle the prompt; it is a death sentence if you stand in it.

Bring a parry-oriented weapon and build for Sha-Chi pressure. The fight is not a DPS race, and a weapon that commits to long animations is a liability when your damage window is a short corporeal stagger. A fast main with a reliable parry gives you the cleanest loop: parry the orb, dodge the grabs, land the heaviest combo you can fit, then reset.

No elemental shortcut is documented for Gu Wanyue. Do not build around a status effect on the assumption that it is sourced. If you have a weapon switch, use it to refill Sha-Chi after a stagger rather than letting the bar sit dry. The combat system explained covers the Sha-Chi and Breach loop in more detail, and the Pangzhen walkthrough places her in the region route.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing a ghost. While the wisps trail her, sword hits deal no HP damage.
  • Spending Power Surge on the incorporeal form. It is wasted.
  • Dodging the purple orb. It flashes blue; parry it back.
  • Dodging the grabs on the wind-up. Dodge on the lunge.
  • Swinging in the black smoke. She can grab from behind, and visibility is the real threat.
  • Treating the fight as a health race. Break Sha-Chi first.
  • Ignoring the screech prompt. Break the stun and dodge the dive.

Sources & confidence

This guide draws on the dedicated Gu Wanyue sources cited by the Pangzhen route — Mobalytics, GamesRadar+, and Fextralife — cross-checked against KeenGamer’s boss-and-rewards list. The incorporeal state, the Sha-Chi break, the blue-flashing purple orb, the two red-flash grabs, the Neck Breaker’s quarter-bar chunk, the black smoke, and the screech prompt are all from that cross-checked route material. The reward label is genuinely unresolved in the repo: the boss table says Fanatic’s Fragment, the region route says Fixation, and no source here gives a reconciled full item name. No HP value is published for her in the research, so this guide deliberately does not print one.
