Phantom Blade Zero hides its best fights behind bells, flowers, and long-pillar duels. These eight optional encounters are not side content to skim; they are the game’s hardest and most memorable tests, and two of them gate the true ending. This guide covers every secret and optional boss, grouped by region and tool requirement, with unlock steps, attack tells, phase strategy, and the mistakes that will cost you the fight.

The Four Great Puppets: Yucong and the Aberrant Puppet

The optional puppet line starts early and ends with the hardest four-phase fight in the game.

Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet — Weeping Creek Valley, Chapter 1. Unlock by entering the Challenge Rift near The Lady’s Rift. The rift is visible early, but the puppet is overtuned for your level at that point; return after Chapter 3. It has three masks, each with its own attack pattern. Burst one mask at a time rather than spreading damage; the fight is a DPS check on focus, not on total output. Puppets are Bleed-immune, so leave bleed weapons at home. Reward: Three-Headed Doll, which is required for the Yucong unlock chain.

Yucong — Crimson Forest, Chapter 2, then a return visit in Chapter 10. Unlock requires the Triple Threat quest, the Aberrant Puppet kill, and reaching the Mirage Estate chapter. Return to the Threadbound Great Tree with the Blazing Edge equipped — without it, phase 3 never triggers and you miss the Chaos Twin Daggers. Yucong has four forms: a base form, then Steel, Frost, and Chaos, each with its own bar, then a three-puppet split. Steel hits hardest; Frost builds freeze; Chaos burns HP and Sha-Chi. Kill order: Steel → Chaos → Frost. Fire is efficient here; Bleed is weak. The most common failure is entering without Blazing Edge and wasting the entire run. Reward: Freezing Chaos.

Meigu Lake: Blizzard Blademaster and the Bell

Blizzard Blademaster — Meigu Lake, Chapter 7. No quest gate. Cross the frozen lake to Whiteshadow’s Fall and ring the bell before the cutscene — if you skip the bell, you lose the checkpoint and must redo the approach. The Blademaster has 186,240 HP and is one of the longest fights in the game. Freezing hits encase you in ice; the spreading ice ring is telegraphed by the line “Watch closely. I’ll strike only once!” Punish after the ring and after the high leap. Do not block the freeze setup — it is a red-flash strike and ignores guard. Build for max weapon level and carry a Longevity Tonic; there is no verified elemental shortcut. Reward: Whiteshadow, and the fight spawns Puppet No. 99, which is needed for the true-ending chain.

Mountain of Imprisonment: Huangxing and Mo Yuan

Huangxing — Mountain of Imprisonment, Chapter 6, Lady’s Shrine hall. A pole-and-ball executioner with 139,680 HP, then 155,200 in phase 2. The critical tell is a thin horizontal red flash before his hits — it is easy to miss against the shrine’s pillars and statues. Punish after ball recovery and after pole thrusts. Do not fight near pillars or statues; they hide wind-ups. Reward: Flying Guillotine.

Mo Yuan — Mirage Estate, Chapter 10, the fifth and final Lóng Pillar. Unlock by winning the first four pillars, then taking the Mirage Long Pillar. Mo Yuan is the Gold-Masked One’s final form, with 223,200 HP. He is a patient counter-fighter; do not overcommit. Parry the red blade, punish between strings, and treat the fight as a duel of restraint rather than aggression. Reward: Bastion of Mo Mask.

Village of Lu: Dusk and the Memory Flowers

Dusk — Village of Lu, Chapter 3. Unlock requires six Memory Flowers, then the ravine past the Broken Puppet Pit. Dusk is a giant puppet woman with 62,520 HP. At 40% health, a duplicate joins with its own full-looking bar. Kill the copy first — its bar drains faster — then clear the crawler adds. The hand slams hit for over 500 damage on Pathbreaker. Do not hard-lock Dusk; the giant and the hands leave frame and you will eat a slam you never saw. Reward: Puppeteer’s Bell.

Mandate Encampment: Chief Disciple

Chief Disciple — Mandate Encampment, Chapter 5, Three Towers field. A seven-man formation with 90,350 HP, then the Sword of Despair with 125,100 HP suspended on threads. Phase 1: kill the six disciples first — they heal the Chief at their own HP cost, and their synced strike can one-shot. Phase 2: the homing thread swarm requires sprinting perpendicular, and red-glowing strings precede an unblockable ranged hit. Use a wide-clear weapon; Bashpole is cited as effective. If you spared Red earlier, she joins the fight — kill her first. Reward: Swordsman’s Summon.

The True Final: Zuo Shang, True Lóng

The true final is the only optional boss that changes the ending. Unlock requires the full Secrets at the Heart of the Lake quest (six flowers, Dusk, four masks, the Mirror, Puppet No. 99, and the High Elder), talking to Inanis for the Violet Blossom, winning all five Lóng Pillars, then taking the gold portal atop Soulrend Cliff after Meng Hua. Skipping the lake quest gives the Annihilation ending and no Zuo Shang fight.

The fight has two forms. The Shadow Sovereign uses golden blades, snap-summoned swords, a seven-hit lunge, and a four-kick aerial. Chip stagger in form 1; do not get greedy. Form 2, True Lóng, has 240,630 HP — the highest in the game. Giant gold blades sweep the arena, a dragon head rises, and “Perish in the Lóng’s breath!” precedes a breath attack. Stay close, dodge the breath, and punish the gold charges. A button-prompt finisher ends it. Rewards: Aureate, Broken Long Body, Radiant Heart, and the With Heart and Blood Gold trophy.

Boss Region Tool/Requirement Reward
Aberrant Puppet Weeping Creek Valley Challenge Rift Three-Headed Doll
Yucong Crimson Forest (return) Triple Threat + Blazing Edge Freezing Chaos
Dusk Village of Lu Six Memory Flowers Puppeteer’s Bell
Chief Disciple Mandate Encampment Three Towers field Swordsman’s Summon
Blizzard Blademaster Meigu Lake Ring bell first Whiteshadow
Huangxing Mountain of Imprisonment Lady’s Shrine hall Flying Guillotine
Mo Yuan Mirage Estate Four prior Lóng Pillars Bastion of Mo Mask
Zuo Shang, True Lóng Soulrend Cliff Full true-ending chain Aureate, Radiant Heart
  • Complete the Aberrant Puppet before Chapter 3 ends (needed for Yucong)
  • Collect all six Memory Flowers before the Village of Lu finale
  • Ring the Whiteshadow’s Fall bell before the Blademaster cutscene
  • Equip Blazing Edge before the Yucong return visit
  • Win all five Lóng Pillars before the Soulrend Cliff portal
  • Finish the lake quest before the final chapter or lose the true ending

Common Mistakes Across All Eight

  • Skipping the bell at Whiteshadow’s Fall — you lose the checkpoint and redo the approach.
  • Fighting Huangxing near pillars — the thin red flash is already hard to read; don’t add visual noise.
  • Hard-locking Dusk — the giant and hands leave frame; use free camera.
  • Entering Yucong without Blazing Edge — phase 3 never triggers and the Chaos Twin Daggers are lost.
  • Treating Mo Yuan as an aggressive fight — he punishes greed; wait for his counters.
  • Skipping the lake quest — you get the Annihilation ending and no True Lóng fight.

For the broader structure, see the boss order guide and the true ending checklist. If you are chasing every trophy, the achievements guide covers which optional kills are safe and which are not.

Sources & confidence

Primary sources are KeenGamer, phantomblade.guide, AllThingsHow, and Kungfupunk’s boss compendium, with capture-derived tells from Atlas and Game8. The biggest uncertainty is the true-final unlock chain: sources agree on the components but differ on whether the lake quest must be completed before or after the fifth Lóng Pillar; this guide follows the more common order. HP values vary by source and cycle and should be treated as approximate.
