Pangzhen is the point where Phantom Blade Zero stops being a revenge story and becomes a conspiracy you can feel pressing in from every alley. The plague-city is the Order’s shadow capital, and it is also the game’s longest single region — eight mandatory bosses, a Mandate detour, four Serpent Houses, and the first hard cutoff for the True Ending. This route follows the played order from PowerPyx and Fextralife, with the region’s known conflicts flagged rather than smoothed over.

Story Context: Why Pangzhen Matters

Soul arrives in Pangzhen after the Village of Lu, chasing the Order that framed him for his master’s murder. The city is dying of plague and run by the Four Serpent Houses — Red (Crimson), Black (Lu), White (Meigu), and Green. The Green Serpent House is the one that matters most: it holds the passage to Mirage Estate, and opening it is the first True Ending cutoff.

Lei Dang, the artificer, repairs the Dormant Flaming Mane into the Flaming Mane. Yu’Er’s house and the Flesh Lily thread from Weeping Creek Valley resolve here. Myst appears in connection with the Serpent keys and the Illusory Pipa. Treat Pangzhen as two halves: the town proper, then the Mandate detour, then the Green Serpent House.

Step-by-Step Route Through Pangzhen

This is the practical order. Numbers matter less than the sequence of gates.

  1. Find the backstreet and enter the Order’s underground tavern. This leads to central Pangzhen.
  2. Defeat Blaze at South Gate Bridge, then Cavalrybane at the Pavilion of Knowledge, then Wu Xuan at the Backstreet Archway, then Gu Wanyue at the Pond of Fading Song.
  3. Visit Yu’Er’s house and resolve the Flesh Lily thread carried over from Weeping Creek Valley.
  4. Visit Lei Dang at Jingyang Hall.
  5. Open the Lion Dance Hall and defeat Flame for the Dormant Flaming Mane.
  6. Return to Lei Dang to receive the Flaming Mane.
  7. Take the optional Mandate Encampment detour (see below). Defeat Xie Qiudong at the Green Serpent House, Chang Hong at the Ancestral Shrine Square, and Soulclaimer at the Dockside Warehouse. Optionally kill Zhu Yuan at the Sha-Chi Tower bottom.
  8. Enter the Green Serpent House, collect the Serpent keys, activate the mechanism, and open the passage to Mirage Estate.

Mandatory Bosses in Pangzhen

Eight story bosses are mandatory in this region. Rewards are one-per-run; missed optional bosses remain available in post-story free roam.

Boss Location Reward
Blaze South Gate Bridge Fire Meteor, Crimson Flesh Lily
Cavalrybane Pavilion of Knowledge Armybreaker
Wu Xuan Backstreet Archway Wolfjaw
Gu Wanyue Pond of Fading Song Fixation
Xie Qiudong Green Serpent House Everflow
Chang Hong Ancestral Shrine Square Thunder Spear
Flame Lion Dance Hall Dormant Flaming Mane
Soulclaimer Dockside Warehouse Parting Hooks

Blaze and Flame both reward Flameward preparation — bring fire resistance and treat their red slams as dodge-only. Chang Hong’s seven-hit string is the region’s hardest parry check; sidestep the charges rather than backing away. Soulclaimer summons Baishan adds, so clear them before committing to the spin punish.

Optional Bosses and the Mandate Detour

The Mandate Encampment opens partway through Pangzhen and is a story chapter with no strictly mandatory boss. KeenGamer lists all its bosses as optional; the region still has a chapter trophy and a main objective, so whether a Normal run can skip it entirely is unconfirmed. Do not skip it if you are chasing the True Ending.

  • You Loong — Waterways, drops You Loong’s Deluge. Beat him before Flame.
  • Acolyte Lei Ting — Old Man Gen’s, drops Leiting’s Thunder Mask. One of the four Acolyte masks.
  • Zhu Yuan — Sha-Chi Tower bottom, drops Scorching Flames. Required for the True Ending.
  • Mandate optionals — Xue, Wan Jun, Red, Chief Disciple, Wu Lengshuang, Yubi. Rewards include Bashpole, Soft Snake Sword, Baishan Stormswords, Swordsman’s Summon, and the Training Grounds Key.

Killing Red at her first encounter locks out the “Daughter of the Dark Sect” tale. Per PowerPyx’s author this is not trophy or True-Ending relevant, but it is a permanent content lock.

Tales, Collectibles and the Four Serpent Houses

The Four Serpent Houses quest sends Soul to the Red (Crimson), Black (Lu), and White (Meigu) Serpent Houses for the Tongue, Fang, and Eye, then back to the Green Serpent House to open Mirage. In practice, the Crimson and Lu portions are already behind you by the time you reach Pangzhen; the White Serpent House is in Meigu Lake, which comes after this region.

Collectibles and threads to track while in Pangzhen:

  • Flesh Lily resolution at Yu’Er’s house — carried from Weeping Creek Valley.
  • Serpent keys — collected in the Green Serpent House, needed to open the Mirage passage.
  • Zhu Yuan — True Ending requirement, easy to walk past at the Sha-Chi Tower bottom.
  • Acolyte Lei Ting — one of four masks needed for the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.
  • Myst — tied to the Serpent keys and the Illusory Pipa repair.

For the wider collectible picture, see the collectibles checklist and the missables checklist.

What Is Missable Before Leaving Pangzhen

The first True Ending cutoff is entering Mirage Estate. Everything below should be done before you activate the Green Serpent House mechanism.

  • Complete every purple-icon quest you intend to finish: Deep in the Valley, Illusion of Inanis, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity, Illusory Pipa, Pillars of Kunlun, Whence the Weeping, The Herald’s Illusion, Crimson Manor, and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake.
  • Defeat Zhu Yuan for Scorching Flames.
  • Collect the Serpent keys in the Green Serpent House.
  • Resolve the Flesh Lily at Yu’Er’s house.
  • Kill Acolyte Lei Ting for the Thunder Mask if you are collecting all four Acolyte masks.
  • Save manually at a bell before the mechanism.

Region Order Conflict: Meigu and Mountain

The biggest route uncertainty in the game sits right after Pangzhen. Data-mined tables place the Mountain of Imprisonment before Meigu Lake; PowerPyx’s played order and the geography favor Meigu first. Mountain is described as “north of Meigu Lake,” and the Yin Crystal Eye is most naturally collected after reaching the lake. This guide follows Meigu → Mountain. Treat the official numbering as medium confidence.

Next Region: Meigu Lake

From Pangzhen you travel to Meigu Lake by Sha-Chi Powered Boat. Meigu is the drowned hub of docks, islands, a songhouse, and the frozen Four Guardians’ Mirror. Its mandatory boss is Heartpiercer at the White Serpent House, and it holds the White Serpent Eye, the four Acolyte masks, and Lóng Pillars 3 and 4. Finish all True Ending steps before Mirage, because the second and final cutoff — The Last Chance — waits on Mount Soulrend.

For the full boss sequence across every region, see the boss order guide. If you are still tuning your build before the Mandate detour, the best builds guide covers the weapon and Phantom Edge combinations that hold up through Pangzhen’s level 10–18 band.

Sources & confidence

Primary sources are PowerPyx’s played walkthrough and True Ending guide, Fextralife’s Game Progress Route and boss pages, and KeenGamer’s boss-and-rewards list, cross-checked against pbz.gg for enemy levels and location names. The largest uncertainty is the Meigu-versus-Mountain order after Pangzhen, where the official chapter table and the played route disagree; the True Ending quest set is also guide-derived rather than datamined.
