Abilities are Phantom Blade Zero’s most forgiving progression layer. You train them at any Bell, they persist across the run, and resetting the tree refunds the Dust you spent — the opposite of Soul Tempering or accessory polish.

The launch guides only document part of the tree. The effects below are the confirmed ones; where a cost or cap is missing, this page says so.

How ability training works

Training happens at any Bell, through the same upgrade menu that handles weapons and medicines. Spending Remnant Dust unlocks or levels a node. Some advanced nodes also require Blackstones, the permanent stat items that give +10% Attack and Guard Break per whole stone. The repo does not map which ability needs how many Blackstones, so check the node’s requirement before you commit a sweep’s worth of Dust.

Two rules make the system easy to live with:

  • Resetting refunds Dust. The repo confirms that abilities reset at any Bell and return the Dust spent. It does not record a reset fee.
  • Advanced nodes are gated by Blackstones, not just Dust. If a node is greyed out with enough Dust in hand, you are probably missing a stone.

Ability levels are not the same as weapon levels. Weapon upgrades run to Lv30 and are refundable through Revert; abilities are a separate tree with their own caps and their own reset button. For the weapon side, see Soul Tempering and weapon upgrades.

Confirmed abilities and what they do

Ability Verified effect Verified cost Cap / notes
Keen Edge +2% Attack and Guard Break per level Not preserved 30 levels
Fortified Body +3% max HP per level Not preserved 30 levels
Focused Mind +3% max Sha-Chi per level Not preserved 30 levels
Boundless Capacity +1 accessory slot Not preserved Reaches a six-slot loadout; rank count not preserved
Healing Art +1 Medicine use 5,000 Dust Single node
Blood Remedy Kills restore Medicine 20,000 Dust Single node
Endless Renewal Lv1 Executions restore HP and Sha-Chi Not preserved First of two tiers
Endless Renewal Lv2 Executions also restore Spark Not preserved Second tier; prerequisite wording not preserved
Redirect Force Parry or dodge restores Sha-Chi Not preserved Single node
Masterful Flow −2 seconds on weapon swap Not preserved Single node
Steady Composure Next Square attack interrupts 5,000 Dust Single node
Still Depths +1 Remnant Spark Not preserved Single node
Ascendance +1 Sha-Chi Essence Not preserved Single node
Unyielding Will Retain Essence on death 40,000 Dust Single node
Quick Remedy Prevents stagger 45,000 Dust Exact trigger not preserved

The three stat skills — Keen Edge, Fortified Body, and Focused Mind — are the only abilities with a confirmed 30-level cap. The rest have no documented multi-level cap. Endless Renewal is the exception with two named tiers, Lv1 and Lv2.

A note on Boundless Capacity: the ability is described as +1 accessory slot, but the finished loadout is described as six slots from a starting two. That implies multiple ranks or repeat purchases. The repo preserves neither the number of ranks nor their prices, so do not budget a single purchase for all four extra slots. See all accessories for what to put in them.

What the costs actually mean

Only five nodes have a documented Dust price:

  • Healing Art — 5,000
  • Steady Composure — 5,000
  • Blood Remedy — 20,000
  • Unyielding Will — 40,000
  • Quick Remedy — 45,000

Everything else is “not preserved.” That includes the per-level cost of Keen Edge, Fortified Body, and Focused Mind, which is the biggest gap in the tree. You will often see advice to “buy Keen Edge first” without a total; the first few levels are the usual recommendation, but the full 30-level investment is not documented.

Use the known anchors to plan. 10,000 Dust buys Healing Art plus Steady Composure. 20,000 buys Blood Remedy. The two luxury nodes, Unyielding Will and Quick Remedy, cost 85,000 Dust combined — a late-game commitment, not an early quality-of-life pick.

The order below assumes a normal playthrough with finite Dust and no farming loop. It prioritises nodes that help every build before nodes that only help one.

First purchases

  1. Healing Art (5,000). One of the cheapest confirmed survivability upgrades. One extra medicine use matters more than a few points of attack early, and it stacks with the Medicine Case accessory.
  2. Boundless Capacity. Even at an unknown price, moving from two accessory slots toward six is the largest single increase in build flexibility. Buy the first upgrade as soon as it is offered.
  3. Keen Edge, several levels. Attack and Guard Break compound across every weapon and build. This is the default Dust sink once survival is covered.

Early mid-game

  1. Fortified Body, several levels. Max HP protects against the one-shot patterns that end boss attempts. Less exciting than damage, more reliable than a perfect parry.
  2. Redirect Force. Parry and dodge are the core defensive actions; turning them into Sha-Chi refills the resource that pays for heavies and guards. Best for players who already parry on reflex.
  3. Steady Composure (5,000). A known cheap price for a guaranteed interrupt on the next Square attack. Strong against bosses that start a wind-up you cannot reach.

Mid-game

  1. Focused Mind, several levels. A larger Sha-Chi pool lets you hold pressure without emptying the gauge. Most valuable on heavy-weapon and guard-heavy builds.
  2. Endless Renewal Lv1, then Lv2. Executions are common, so HP and Sha-Chi refunds accumulate quietly. Lv2’s Spark refund is the real prize if you lean on Phantom Edges.
  3. Masterful Flow. A −2 second swap cooldown improves the dump-weapon-A → swap-attack → dump-weapon-B loop. A comfort pick, not a damage spike.

Late-game and luxury

  1. Still Depths (+1 Spark) and Ascendance (+1 Essence). Both raise your ceiling in long boss fights. Buy them when you are already winning and want more finishers or Surges per attempt.
  2. Blood Remedy (20,000). Excellent in trash-heavy regions, less useful in a single boss room. Buy it before a long dungeon, not before a duel.
  3. Unyielding Will (40,000). Retaining Essence on death saves a full Zero State in a multi-phase fight. A safety net for progression, not a damage upgrade.
  4. Quick Remedy (45,000). The most expensive confirmed node, and the one with the least precise description. Test it before building around it.

Build synergies

Build Abilities that matter Why
Bleed / Guard Break boss killer Keen Edge, Redirect Force, Steady Composure, Boundless Capacity More damage on the break, more Sha-Chi from defence, and an interrupt for phase wind-ups
Parry and counter Redirect Force, Steady Composure, Healing Art, Boundless Capacity Parries fund the gauge; Steady Composure covers the attacks you cannot parry; extra heals extend attempts
Beginner / safe Healing Art, Endless Renewal Lv1, Keen Edge, Boundless Capacity Fewer deaths from chip damage, passive refunds on executions, and flexible accessories
Sustain Blood Remedy, Endless Renewal Lv2, Healing Art, Quick Remedy Refund medicine on kills, restore resources on executions, and protect the heal
Sha-Chi pressure Focused Mind, Redirect Force, Masterful Flow, Ascendance Bigger gauge, more refills, faster swaps, and an extra Essence for Power Surge

The elemental build in best builds lists Breath Control, and the difficulty guide lists Fluid Form. Both names appear in the repo, but their effects are not reproduced. Treat them as unverified until you read the node in-game; do not budget Dust around them.

Respec rules and practical advice

  • Reset at any Bell. Abilities are the only major progression layer with a built-in refund. Use it when a boss demands a different defensive answer.
  • Dust comes back; Blackstones are less clear. Dust is refunded; the repo does not confirm Blackstone handling, so avoid sinking rare stones into a test node.
  • Weapon levels Revert; Soul Temper, polish, and medicine do not. Put experiments into abilities first.
  • Respec at a Bell before the attempt, not after the door closes.
  • Pair offence with one defensive node. Keen Edge plus Fortified Body, or Keen Edge plus Redirect Force, is more stable than stacking a single stat to its cap.
